On Sunday 11th September, which was a wild, wet and windy day in London, Brendan and I went to the Thames Festival, on the banks of the River Thames. It is always a great day out, as it really gives a flavour of how many different people from so many countries populate our city.
We spent late afternoon wandering along the South bank of the Thames, where there were hundreds of stalls selling food and products from all over the world. London is truly a world city, and this festival shows that you don’t need to be native to Britain to be a Londoner! All you have to do is live here.
One of the highlights of the festival was the Mayor’s Parade, a kind of carnival that goes along the riverside on the Sunday night. I took some video of it, as you can see here on the left. In this video, you’ll see musicians, dancers, drummers and floats from some of the many nationalities who are proud to call themselves Londoners. Fortunately, the rain held off while the parade was on, so we did not need our umbrellas. At the end of the evening, there was a spectacular firework display, launched from barges in the middle of the river.
One of the aims of the festival is to promote the importance of the River Thames as a central feature of London. Of course, it always has been and always will be central to London life, but of course unless you live by the river or cross it regularly, it is easy to forget it is there. So this festival gives us a chance to have a party next to it all weekend! You can hear about more about this amazing river in my blog on The River Thames.
I thought that this year’s Thames Festival was especially poignant as it was on the 10 year anniversary of the September 11th attacks in New York. That awful day, with all its long repercussions throughout the world, was a time when the world seemed so divided. So it was great to spend September 11th 2011 at a festival celebrating diversity and bringing cultures together.
